How to Identify 240 GSM Quality T-Shirts in Store: 5 Tests
Many brands claim premium cotton without specifying GSM. Here is how to verify 240 GSM quality yourself. No equipment needed.
Test 1: The Pinch Test
How: Pinch the fabric between thumb and forefinger.
180 GSM feels like: One sheet of paper. Thin, you can feel your fingers almost touching through it.
240 GSM feels like: 2-3 sheets of paper stacked. Noticeable thickness, your fingers do not touch.
Instant indicator: If you can easily compress the fabric to nothing, it is not 240 GSM.
Test 2: The Light Test
How: Hold the t-shirt up to overhead store lights or window.
Thin fabric (160-180 GSM): You see light clearly through it. Can see your hand outline.
240 GSM: Blocks most light. Only a faint glow, no hand outline visible.
Bonus: White 240 GSM tees should still be opaque against light.
Test 3: The Stretch Test
How: Pull the fabric horizontally and vertically.
Low quality: Stretches 30-40%, takes time to recover shape.
240 GSM super combed cotton: Minimal stretch (10-15%), snaps back immediately.
What this tests: Fabric density and cotton quality. 240 GSM has tighter weave = less stretch.
Test 4: The Collar Test
How: Gently tug the collar outward.
Cheap tees: Collar stretches noticeably, does not fully bounce back.
240 GSM with Lycra ribbed collar: Resists stretching, returns to original shape instantly.
Red flag: If the collar feels loose or thin, the body fabric will not be 240 GSM either.
Test 5: The Weight Test
How: Hold two similar-sized tees (one claiming 240 GSM, one standard).
Obvious difference: 240 GSM feels noticeably heavier. Not slightly. Clearly heavier.
Rule of thumb: A medium 240 GSM tee weighs approximately 200-220 grams. If it feels as light as your regular tees, it is not 240.
The Label Check (If Available)
Look for:
- 240 GSM explicitly stated
- 100% Cotton or Super Combed Cotton
- Weight specification
Red flags:
- Premium Quality with no GSM number
- Cotton blend (dilutes quality)
- No fabric specs at all
